Resear ch I nstitute of Exp lor ation Develop ment, Petr o China Chan qin Oilf ield Comp any , X ian 710021, China Abstract For determining t he distribution pattern of the depositional system of Yanchang Format ion in the northwest of Ordos basin, the authors chose midlow er Yanchang Formation and did a systematic research on the provenance and t he characteristics of the mot her rock by methods such as t he analysis of rocks and m inerals, heavy mineral analysis, paleocur rent survey, sand distribut ion system draw ing and paleotopogrphy reconstruction etc. . The results indicate that the st udy area is mainly affect ed by four sediment sources, w hich have favorable spatial combination w ith deposit ional system: Rujigou lobe w hich has the largest influence on the study area is controlled by the Alxa Ancient Land; Shigouyi lobe develops from the overt hrust sheet of Daluo M ountain; Otog Qi lobe and Dingbian lobe are controlled by t he sedim
