They are generic and specific Lucent equipment names are not included. 13 5 6 7 8 9 This and the following two slides show how a transport network can evolve and start incorporating IP/SONET and IP/WDM without requiring a major overhaul of the network. In 搕oday抯?network routers are connected to ATM switches that are in turn connected to SONET/SDH add-drop multiplexers and cross-connect systems. The IP packets exchanged between the routers is carried in an ATM layer which in turn is carried in a SONET layer. The ATM layer thus carries IP but can carry ATM traffic generated by other ATM sources as well. Hence, the network could carry both IP as well as Voice-over-ATM traffic. In the second phase of the network evolution, switches, routers and end-points are added. The amount of traffic between nodes increases to a point where routers are connected via OC-12 rate (622 Mb/s) logical links. For reasons of efficiency these connections could be carried directly over SONET, since that would avoid the 25% cell tax that ATM brings in. Note: this step is labeled 揟omorrow? However, IP/SONET is already being deployed today, e.g.. by Sprint. The fact that some IP packets are carried directly over SONET does not mean that there is no ATM traffic left. In fact, IP/SONET, IP/ATM and other ATM traffic are al carried over the same SONET infrastructure. One thing that is shown in this picture is the possible integration of switching functionality with SONET cross-connect functionality (see the dashed box). Lucent is now working on the Wavestar Bandwidth Management (WBM) product line that integrates SONET, ATM and IP functionality.
