The research finds that the new media appear in the traditional news media mainly as a source of information rather than the originator of the news agenda or a platform for expressing public opinion. Data were gathered from the new media which were cited in the traditional media from 30 September to 30 December 2010. The analysis shows that the use of new media is driven by commercial considerations. Commercial concerns, rather than an attempt to improve the quality of news contents, largely determine how traditional media organizations use the new media sources. Keywords: convergence; journalism; new media; social media; technology Introduction The important issue of media convergence is often debated in the current digital age, but a topic that is rarely discussed is the convergence between traditional journalism and new media information. On the one hand, journalism is important in a democratic society. News is considered the life-blood of democracy, and serves as contributing vital sources of information gathering, deliberation, and action (Fenton, 2010). That is the reason why we call journalists the watchdogs of democracy. Journalists are disseminators and interpreters of news and information. Furthermore, in the digital age, audiences can interact with the media and its content, thus blurring the line between professional journalists and amateurs.
