The first sentence The preoccupation with socially advantageous marriage in the 19th century England society manifests itself in the first sentence, because in claiming that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife, the narrator reveals that the reverse is also true: a single woman, especially the one not in possession of a good fortune, must be in ( perhaps desperate ) want of a (wealthy) husband. Rhetorically speaking, the sentence is an irony.
