Abstract
The paper deals with the dynamic weighing of dairy cows. A simple physical–mathematicalmodel that simulates cow walk is described. The four-legged system of cow movement is simpli?edas a two legged system. The output of the model, which is the force to the ground produced by a cow’sfeet, depends on walking speed and body weight. The developed model was used for body weight determination as cows crossed a walk-through weighing scale. An accuracy of 2%compared to statically measured body weight could be achieved in the absence of crowding of animals traversing the platform.

1. Introduction
Dairy farming is developing into automated production system. The objective is to fully automate every process from feeding to milking in order to reduce production costs and maximise milk yield. Dynamic weighing of cattle is an important segment of this system. Weighing in motion without stopping the animal’smovement after it leaves the milking parlour is of interest due to continuity of the milking process and smaller variations of body weight when measured at the same time of the day. The forces to the ground during the cow’spassage are recorded on walk-through weighers. Walk-through weighing scale ?Corresponding author.
