Canada V3T 1V8 jaboan@surrey.ca ; 604-591-4514 Abstract Reduced delays at signalized intersections and improved travel times were the primary traffic engineering challenges in the past. Currently, transportation planners around the world are mainly focused on facilitating and promoting sustainable modes of transportation . This is important as these modes can help reduce congestion, improve safety and residents’ health as well as benefitting the environment. However, most cities with good transit and active transportation mode shares still experience high traffic volumes and congestion. Rather than looking to new and expanded infrastructure, optimizing traffic flow in an existing city road network through an affordable traffic management centre utilizing intelligent transportation systems can be an important tool to support sustainable mobility, reduce delays, improve safety and minimize environmental impacts. Affordable Traffic Management Centre A fast growing young city By welcoming over 1,000 new residents each month, the City of Surrey, BC, is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, and the fastest in Metro Vancouver. Even though it is relatively young, officially designated as a city in 1993, it already has a current population of a half million residents. This makes it the second largest City in the Province of British Columbia and 12th largest in Canada. At 31
