Nexco-Engineering Niigata Company Limited, Japan Abstract We constructed an assistance system that helps operators carry out snow-removal operations efficiently with display messages and voice guidance that alert operators to hazard zones. The system works by tracking the real-time location of winter service vehicles on expressways with GPS. We report how this operator-assistance system helps inexperienced operators acquire snow-removal skills and knowledge about local conditions and how it functions with when operators are called in to assist with heavy localized snowfalls. Background The most important problem in managing expressways and other roadways in cold, snowy regions is dealing with snow and ice to ensure safe traffic flows in the winter season. As shown Fig.1 Fig.2, mechanical snow removal is the primary means of dealing with snow and ice. These means include snowplows that cast freshly fallen snow off roadways, snow blowers that wing back snow farther from roadways and haul snow away, and gritters that spread antifreeze agents on roadways
