Tools Name: Hexagon Technique for Systems Thinking

Description: The hexagon technique can be used with groups to build a collective understanding of a focus issue. It is a relatively quick and controlled means of helping individuals appreciate the wider context of a problem in an active and participative way.
By continuing the process through to systems thinking, the group is able to move from a collective understanding of the key theme of issues to understanding how those issues interrelate and drive each other over time.
The process enables groups to share and challenge their mental models around an issue or problem, establish a space for focused dialogue and identify potential strategies for intervention given their group diagnosis of the focus issue.
The process relies on following a sequence of structured facilitation steps which is divergent and generative in the first instance (i.e. through issue generation) and then convergent and diagnostic (i.e. through clustering, the identification of key variables and the development of a causal-loop model).
The approach was developed from the schools of Soft Operational Research and Systems Thinking. Implicitly, it incorporates the concepts of mental models and balancing advocacy and inquiry as the group builds a common understanding of the focus issue. Explicitly, it incorporates the practice of brainstorming and the concept that structure drives behaviour.
Change Dimension: The process is a means of linking the personal and organisational dimensions. As a diagnostic tool, it is particularly relevant in the early stages of building a shared view on a set of issues.
