Creative Focus: How can we grow our business?
Distortion Provocation Technique Overview:
In any situation there are ‘normal’ time sequences of action and relationships between parties. A distortion provocation is achieved by taking these normal arrangements and changing them. This, of course, distorts the situation and we have a provocation. Examples of distortion provocations are: our clients train us, or we do work before we contract to do it.
Example:
In Serious Creativity de Bono gives the following application examples of the distortion provocation technique.
Creative Focus: Postage
Distortion Provocation: You close the letter after you post it
This distortion leads to the idea that if the sender does not want to pay postage, he posts the letter without sealing the envelope. A direct mail advertiser then inserts a leaflet or other message into the envelope, closes it, and pays the postage.
According to de Bono, a distortion provocation along the lines of ‘you die before you die,’ led Ron Barbaro of Prudential to the idea of ‘living benefits.’

Determine your provocation using distortion
Remember, to be effective, the provocative statement must be bold, even a touch ridiculous. It cannot fit in with ideas or concepts that you already have or it won’t serve it’s purpose of helping us out of the box.
Quickly list a few provocative statements and decide one to develop
Extract principles from the provocation
Consider the provocation and extract four to six principles, concepts or features.
An example de Bono provides is that in an advertising agency looking for a new advertising medium, someone suggested using town criers. They extracted principles or aspects upon which to build such as:
town criers can go where the people are
