But if a past request has been refused or ignored or if you anticipate reluctance, then the indirect pattern is appropriate. 2 Tips for making persuasive claims • Begin with a compliment, point of agreement, statement of the problem, or brief review of action you have taken to resolve the problem. • Body: • Explain precisely what happened or why your claim is legitimate; explain why the receiver company/institution is responsible; • Enclose copies of relevant invoices, shipping orders, warranties, and payments to support your claim. • Avoid sounding angry, emotional, or irrational. • Close by telling exactly the remedy you want.
