About the same time, China started its opening up and reform process with a shift of focus on economic development. Trade between China’s mainland US has grown from $2.4 billion in 1979 to over $500 billion in 2013. China and the United States are now each others second largest trading partner. Back in 1972, contacts between the two countries were extremely limited. Now, annual personnel exchange has exceeded 2 million persons/times. Over 5,000 people are crossing the Pacific every day.
