Bronte sisters’ life experience – Born at Thomton, Yorkshire, of Irish ancestry – Mother died of cancer when Charlotte was 5 years old and there were 5 daughters and one son in the family. – Charlotte and three of her sisters were sent away to a Clergy Daughters’ School, where conditions were very harsh. The two oldest sisters died there. – For a short time in 1837 Emily moved to Halifax in order to teach at Law Hill School. While there, she discovered many of the ideas and themes used in Wuthering Heights. – In 1842, Charlotte and Emily went to Brussels to study languages. There Charlotte fell in love with a married teacher, but he discouraged her letters to him. – At a young age, the children created a fictional world they named Angria, and their many stories, poems, and plays were early predictors of shared writing talent that eventually led Emily, Anne, and Charlotte to careers as novelists. – Charlotte was especially found of Byron, knew most of his works by the time she was 13 and Byron’s brooding heroes were prototypes for characters in her childhood writings, as well as figures like Mr. Rochester. – In 1846, Charlotte her sisters started publishing poems and began writing novels.
