Photo note: Microscopically, most follicular carcinomas are composed of fairly uniform cells forming small follicles. In this photograph, we can see the tumor cells invading into the capsule and the blood vessels. Medullary carcinomas of the thyroid are neuroendocrine neoplasms derived from the parafollicular cells, or C cells, of the thyroid. Medullary carcinomas arise sporadically in about 80% of cases.
