Reagent Phosphate solution.—Dissolve 100 g (NH4)2HPO4 in hot H2O, di- lute to 1 L, and add 5 mL CHCl3. B. Determination To combined filtrates and washings, 917.02 (see 1.3.04), add 2 mL 1M citric acid (192.12g/L), 100 mL NH4OH, and 50 mL alco- hol. Then add 25 mL of the phosphate solution, with constant stir- ring, and let stand 12–24 h. Filter, wash twice with NH4OH (1 + 9), and dissolve precipitate in HNO3 (1 + 4), washing solution into orig- inal beaker to volume of 100–150 mL. Add 110 volume NH4OH and 2 drops of the phosphate solution. Stir vigorously and let stand 3 h. Fil- ter through Gooch, wash with NH4OH (1 + 9), moisten filter with sat- urated solution of NH4NO3 made slightly ammoniacal, ignite, and weigh as Mg2P2O7. Report as percent MgO.
