Alert calls are sent to coast stations. An alert on h/IF and/or VHF may also be made to ships in the vicinity in these sea areas. ② A coast station acknowledges alerts from ship in distress using a DSC message addressed to “all ships”. This will be sent as soon as practicable on VHF. On MF/HF this will be sent after a minimum delay of one minute, but a maximum delay of 2 minutes 45 seconds is possible. The delay allows sufficient time for single or multi-frequency attempts to be completed by the distress ship and for the coast station to react to the alert. The distress acknowledgement will automatically cancel repetitions of the distress alert from the distress ship. The coast station then sets watch on the appropriate radiotelephony or radiotelex frequency. Passage 16 ③ Ship stations set watch on the associated RT frequency and acknowledge the alert by this method (RT). If however the DSC distress alert continues to be sent (for more than three minutes), the ship should send a DSC acknowledgement. This acknowledgement will automatically cancel repetitions of the distress alert from the distress ship. The receiving ship should then inform a coast station of the alert (by making a distress relay transmission) using any communication means at its disposal. ④ When a DSC call containing the telecommand”Distress Relay” is received on any HF channel and is not acknowledged by a coast station within five minutes, any ship should transmit a distress relay call to the appropriate coast station. ⑤ A coast station should transmit a”Distress Relay Acknowledgement” signal by RT.
