Lesson 4 Selection of the Steel The most important requirements for the mold steels are: (i) High compressive strength expected even at high temperatures; (ii) Wear resistance; (iii) Great toughness; (iv) Corrosion resistance and good thermal conductivity. Also, the mold maker expects the following properties: (i) Good machinability; (ii) Good hobbing capabilities (where required); (iii) Dimensional stability during heat treatment; (iv) Good polishing properties; (v) Surface texturing without difficulties (where required).
