Low frequency simulation of a Gas Insulated Switchgear CST EM STUDIO? (CST EMS) can be applied to the sim ulatio n of an ABB Calor Em ag SF6 Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) such as the one depicted in figure 1 which was also simulated in [1]. A primary goal of such a simulatio n is to obtai n the curre nt distributi on in the switchgear con ductors with proximity and skin depth effects take n into accou nt. The CST EMS Low Freque ncy solver is appropriate for this purpose. The geom etry is imported from Pro/E? and con sists of a m etallic hous ing in which a three-phase con ductor system is situated. The m etallic hous ing is con sidered as perfectly con duct ing whereas the inner con ductors have a electrical con ductivity of 3.2e7 S/m . 50 Hz three phase curre nts of magn itude 4000 A, shifted in phase by 120 degrees, are in jected via 3 so-called curre nt paths, defi ned at the ends of the con ductors on the sam e side of the GIS. This model, solved with the CST EMS Low Freque ncy (m agn etoquasistatic) tetrahedral solver, con sists of 1.48 millio n tetrahedro ns corresp onding to 1.72 m illi on complex unknowns and simulates to an accuracy of 1e-6 in just 8 m in utes on an In tel 2 GHz Woodcrest system .
