The American Culture As it is significant to our sense of literary history, Puritan influential declined in the period, partly due to the challenge of Enlightenment ideas, and partly because the rise of Philadelphia, Hartford, New York gained these cities the status of literary capitals paving the way for the appearance of modern American novel and drama. The Significance of the American Revolution The hard-fought American Revolution against Britain was the first modern war of liberation against a colonial power. Military victory fanned nationalistic hopes for a great new literature.
