Abstract In the process of En glish lear ning, the differe nces betwee n En glish and Chinese syntax, one of the major difficulties, often puzzles most Chin ese stude nts, for differe nt people have differe nt ways of thought which lead to differe nt habitual expressi on. This dissertatio n focuses on con trastive study of syn tax of En glish and Chin ese with the purpose to explore the similarities and particularly dissimilarities between these two unrelated Ianguages. It is hoped that through con trastive study, it will be easier for Chin ese stude nts to get a better comma nd of En glish. What s more importa nt, the result of the con trastive study, which improves their compete nee and performa nee. A con trastive study of differe nt la nguages not only helps to form a new method, which can be applied in Ian guage teach ing an d tran slati on but also ben efits the in ter-li ngual com muni cati on. By con trastive study, la nguage lear ners can gain a better in sight of peculiarities of their mother Ian guage and the foreig n Ian guage.
