Status of South Africa’s Aquaculture Industry South Africa’s aquaculture production is at small scale compared with other counties like China, America, Norway, France, etc. Total production more than 4000 tons in 2016, a 18.22% showing improvement. Aquaculture contributed to 2,227 jobs in 2013 and contributes about 0.7 billion, 0.2% to SA’s GDP. SA contribute 0.00003% to the Global aquaculture production and 1% to Africa’s production. There are more than 229 marine and freshwater aquaculture farms, mostly operating at small-scale (5-50 tons) in SA.
