Passage 1
Reduci ng the amount of sleep stude nts get at ni ght has a direct impact on their performa nee at school duri ng the day. Accord ing to classroom teachers, eleme ntary and middle school stude nts who stay up late exhibit more lear ning and atte nti on problems. This has bee n show n by Brow n Medical School and Bradley Hospital research. In the study, teachers were not told the amount of sleep stude nts received whe n completi ng weekly performa nee reports, yet they rated the stude nts who had received eight hours or less as having the most trouble recalling all the material , learning new lessons and completing high-quality work. Teachers also reported that these students had more difficulty pay ing atte nti on. The experime nt is the first to ask teachers to report on the effects of sleep deficie ncy in childre n. Just stay ing up late can cause in creased academic difficulty and atte nti on problems for otherwise healthy, well- functioning kids, said Garhar n Fori one, the study s

we aren t doing our job ” , Forlone said. For parents, he said, the message is simple, “ g
bed on time is as importa nt as gett ing them to school on time ”.
