Show the students several English newspapers and ask: Have you ever read any English newspapers? When you read a newspaper, how can you find out the most important information quickly? 2. Tell the students: When you read a newspaper, you should skim the headlines first. They’ll tell you the topic of each article. 3. Tell the students: Newspaper headlines use the present tense. Some words are left out to save space, including a/an/the, do/does/did, the verb be and and/but/or Task 2:Practice Encourage students to read the headlines in Part A and just pay attention to the words in bold. Show some headlines in the newspapers and ask students to delete some unnecessary words. (1)A boy is wanted (Boy wanted) (2) A train is saved by a boy (Train saved by boy) (3) A man is killed on the mountain (Man killed on mountain0 Add more headlines’ features for the students 1.Headlines are not always complete sentences. Many headlines are noun phrase with no verb, e.g. Holiday Hotel death. 2.Headlines often use to-infinitive to refer to the future, e.g. Hospitals to take fewer patients. 3.Headlines usually use short words to save space, e.g. aid, back, cut. Task 3:Presentation 1 .Show an article from a newspaper. Help the students find the information in the artlcle. 2.Tell the students that Newspapers use a special style of writing. Usually the most important informationthe who, what, where, when and how comes first in an article. The details come next, from the most important details to the least important ones.
