Teaching procedure Step 1 Lead-in (2 min) Interactive task 1: Can you tie your shoes with two hands? But can you do it with a single hand? Step 2 Check knowledge before reading(4 min) Interactive task 2: Check Content and Language Content Our knowledge of Marty Language Key words expressions absence firm one in a million Live one day at a time Students: show their own knowledge before reading Teacher:give some comments on students’ performances and show teacher’s own understanding Purpose: to make students know when we read something, we should have the ability to figure out some key and difficult points by ourselves. Step 3 Discourse analysis(20 min) Interactive task 3: what is the textual pattern? Students: find personal pronouns in para 1 and judge the textual pattern Teacher: give students hints to help them catch the key point--first personal pronoun Purpose: to develop students’ skimming ability and make them learn the style of narration Interactive task 4: How does the disease develop? Students: figure out the development of narration by general-particular pattern; summarize the characteristics of Marty who is disable but strong-minded Teacher: help and give them some hints if necessary Purpose: to develop students’ abilities to analyze and summarize the text.
