His novel The Godfather described the growth and struggling history of American Mafia godfather, Don Corleone and his family. It was the first crime fiction depicting the Mafia .Based on the present researches at home and abroad, this thesis tries to analyze The Godfather from the angles of authenticity and artistry by comparison and contrasts to explain its popularity. Introduction Though sociologists and literary scholars may forever debate the value of Puzos work, most would agree that he is a writer who has left a permanent imprint on the American cultural scene through his The Godfather (1969). Most scholars make comments on Puzo and his works from various aspects, including the plots of the book, the portraits of Mafia in the United Stated, the ethnic views of Puzo and so on. On the basis of the previous studies, this paper gives a comprehensive analysis on the artistry and authenticity in The Godfather. 1.1 Mario Puzo and The Godfather Mario Puzo (1920—1999) is a famous popular fiction novelist. Puzo was born in an Italian immigrant family. He lived an impoverished childhood while fond of reading. In his youth, he was especially interested in works of Russian great writer Dostoevsky and was determined to be a writer.
