It helps him walk. When Lucky was one month old, his keepers at the Santa Barbara Zoo noticed his leg wasnt growing properly. He walked with a limp (跛行) and developed wounds on the bottom of his foot. So the penguins keepers asked a shoe company to make him a boot that would protect his foot from getting hurt. “Luckys health immediately improved once he started wearing the shoe,” says Rachel Ritchason, the zoos assistant curator (馆长) of birds. The shoe doesnt let water through, so Lucky can wear it while swimming. “Now Lucky acts just like the other penguins,” Ritchason says. — John Mieklos, Jr. Craig Cygan recently found a deer behaving oddly. For a week, whenever he came near a hole, it stood in his path. Finally, Cygan knew the deer was guarding a goose and her eggs! Normally goose parents protect their eggs together. But this bird was missing her mate, and her eggs were in danger of being eaten. “The deer came and helped out,” Cygan says. Over the next month, the deer kept the eggs safe. When there were animals going near the hole, the deer drove them away. After the young geese hatched (孵出), the deer left.
