Acknowledgements The Europe Sustainable Development Report 2021 was prepared by a team of independent researchers at the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), in collaboration with SDSN Europe and the Institute for a European Environmental Policy (IEEP). It builds on the peer-reviewed and statistically audited methodology of the annual Sustainable Development Report, including the SDG Index and Dashboards, issued by the SDSN and Bertelsmann Stiftung since 2016. Compared with other SDG assessments at the global and EU levels, this report integrates to a greater extent non-official data sources (from research centres, NGOs and academia). It defines performance thresholds for each indicator based on a decision tree and captures impacts that Europe generates abroad, notably through trade (so-called negative international ‘spillovers’).
