Course Objectives
Students should be able to hold conversations in fairly fluent English. They should, by and large, be able to express their personal opinions, feelings and views, to state facts and reasons, and to describe events with clear articulation and basically correct pronunciation and intonation (College English Curriculum Requirements, 2007). The course emphasizes conversations, discussion leading, presentations, and vocabulary building so students can speak English with confidence.
The course provides practice in
★ language use (fluency/accuracy/complexity);
★ topic development (fluency and coherence);
★ delivery (accurate pronunciation, stress and intonation patterns).
The course encourages critical thinking, collaborative learning and independent practice. Learning the course, students will be able to
★ carry out group projects.
★ practice with on-line materials (recommended in related resources).
★ speak in English socially (including in the English Corner).
Contents
Session 1: College Life and Study
Teaching Focuses and Tasks
Greetings and introductions; talking about oneself.
Task 1: Get to know each other.
Task 2: Share reading and discuss the qualities of a successful college student with the topical vocabulary.
Task 3: Discuss and work out a list of qualities that make a successful college student.
Session 2: Food and Health
Teaching Focuses and Tasks
Opening and closing a conversation; controlling a conversation.
Task 1: Discuss in pair--My classmate’s eating habit.
Task 2: Discuss in pair --The foods I like; Group work--The Top 10 Healthy Foods.
Task 3: Discuss in group --My suggestions to the university canteen to provide healthy food.
Session 3: Friendship
Teaching Focuses and Tasks
Asking about or giving definitions; describing a friend and personalities.
