Though it’s sometimes overlooked because it’s not necessary for combustion, the lubrication system is as necessary as fuel and the engine The oil system is hugely important to keeping your engine running so we need to know how it works and its normal indications Objectives Purpose of the lubrication system Components Principles of operation Indications to pilot Emergency/abnormal situations Purpose of the lubrication system Lubricate the engine’s moving parts Cooling of the engine (friction and heat transfer) Providing a seal between cylinder walls and pistons Carrying away contamination Protects from corrosion and rust Components Sump Oil suction strainer screen Engine driven oil pump Bypass valve Oil cooler Pressure relief valve Oil filler cap and dipstick Sump Cessna has a wet sump system Oil sits in an open pan at the bottom Can’t do upside down flight or the oil will spill out Aerobatic airplanes have a dry sump Pan where the oil sits when it’s not being used Oil suction strainer screen Oil is sucked out of the sump and through the strainer screen by the engine driven oil pump Keeps contaminants out of the system Engine driven oil pump Sucks oil out of the sump and through the strainer screen Bypass valve If the oil is cold, it bypasses the oil cooler and goes directly to the oil filter If the oil is hot, the bypass valve routes it into the oil cooler Oil leaves the cooler and goes to the oil filter Oil cooler Works like a radiator Oil flows through tiny pipes and is cooled by air flowing over the pipes Pressure relief valve Regulates engine oil pressure by allowing excessive oil to return to the sump while the rest of the oil circulates in the system Oil pressure transducer is on the pressure relief valve How the oil pressure gauge gets its information Oil filler cap and dipstick Located on the right side of the cowling Has a stick that can be screwed out and used to measure
