Unit 10 Introduction to Block Diagram 10.1  Introduction Any engineering system can be represented by a combination of blocks. Each block has a single line into it and a single line out. Within the block is a statement of its operation. The block indicates what happens to the input information after that information is passed on it. X (s) G1 Y(s) 1mV Amplifier 200mV Input Output Input Gain 200 Output Fig. 1 A block diagram of an amplifier 2019/9/5 2 10.2  Summing Point and Tie Point Feed more than one signal into an amplifier at the same time → Summing Point / Junction (a) Negative Summing Point (b) Positive Summing Point A circle and a cross with arrows into and out of the symbol.  The arrows into the symbol are always identified with a plus or minus sign, indicating either a positive or a negative signal.  The signal with their sign through the circle always means algebraic sum of the signals into summing point. 2019/9/5 3 The signal flow in more than one direction → Tie point / Pick off point A node or junction where no summing (positively or negatively) is done.  Providing extra paths along with the signal may flow without affecting its flow along its (c) Tie Point original path. 2019/9/5
