This terminal sites on Yangshan Island at the mouth of Hangzhou Bay 27.5О away from the Luchaogang area in the southeastern Nanhui District of Shanghai. The terminal comprises five 16m-deep berths, which can accommodate super large containerships loaded with more than 8,000 TEUs. Yangshan Island is linked with Luchaogang logistics park by the 32.5km Donghai Bridge. The Shanghai Port Authority will open 4 berth phase ケ terminal at end of 2006 and the 9 berth phase ゲ terminal in 2008.. The Port Authority will construct 30 berths by 2015 and further 20 berths by 2020. Therefore the Port of Shanghai, which has now 21 containership berths will become the biggest shipping center in the world with an annual handling capacity of more than 40 million TEUs. The opening of the phase グ terminal in Yangshan Island is a historic turning point in Shanghai\s port development. This event means that the Port of Shanghai, by getting around the difficulties of Yangtze River port, will take a huge leap toward its goal of becoming the world\s biggest deep-water container seaport. After opening the Yangshan terminal, many super large vessels which operate on the trunk routes between Asia, and North America or Europe will call in Shanghai. Therefore Shanghai can strengthen its position as a transshipment hub in the East Asia shipping market and this change of position will reduce Shanghai\s cargoes which are transshipped at other hub ports such as Hong Kong, Kaohsiung and Busan. With super large vessels calling at Yangshan terminals, existing large vessels which have been calling at Waigaoqiao terminals in Shanghai will move to other routes between North China, and North Europe or North America.
