Abstract The Paradigm about Returning Arable Land to Forest and Grassland in the North Transitional Agro-pasture Area ——Using Zhangbei County in Hebei Province as a Example Insuring the environmental status of the transitional agro-pasture area is the guarantee of the sustainable development of economy in west area of our country and the safety of ecology, however, as a result of the environmental frangibility of the transitional agro-pasture area and unconscionable man-made interfere to the transitional agro-pasture area, the transitional agro-pasture area not only can’t bring the role of ecological barrier into play but also becomes the victim of destroyed ecological environment. All these reasons heavily influent the environmental status and economical development in east area of our country. So protecting vegetation of the transitional agro-pasture area is needed. In this paper we make engineering of returning arable land to forest or grassland of pilot period in Zhangbei County as a example, by using data of the high resolution remote sensing images and DEM of 1:50000 scale of Zhangbei County and using the methods of physiognomy sub area and slop analysis, discussing the paradigm of returning arable land to forest or grassland of the transitional agro-pasture area with aspect of the structure and dynamic of the farming land, the grassland and the woodland in different physiognomy sub area and slop in Zhangbei County and indicating the shortage of ecological recovery in Zhangbei County.
