The underwear brand announced back in May that the iconic lingerie parade, which has been a catwalk classic since 1995, would no longer be aired on television networks due to dwindling viewership and a growing disapproval of gender representation in the show. The glamourous event features supermodels bestowed the title of “angels” who showcase the brand’s scanty undies. Within the fashion world, it was previously seen as a prized honor to be named an angel for one of the swanky shows. In recent years, however, the brand has suffered a drop in both retail sales and ratings for the stage show in the wake of feminist movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp. Emerging startups are marketing themselves as the antithesis of Victoria’s Secret. These new enterprises are pushing a new agenda to empower their female customers, no matter their shape or size, and to produce comfortable undergarments, instead of outfits sexually appealing to men. Nowadays, the objectification of women and the lingerie abetting it are becoming increasingly out-of-date.
