The National Health Service (NHS) is the system of public healthcare providers in the United Kingdom. It includes NHS England, NHS Scotland, NHS Wales, and the affiliated Health and Social Care (HSC) in Northern Ireland. They were established together in 1948 as one of the major social reforms following World War II. The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, apart from dental treatment and optical care. The English NHS also requires patients to pay prescription charges with a range of exemptions from these charges.?Although the NHS has provided many people with free medical services, it has come under great pressure in the past decades. Official figures for NHS 2018 performance revealed: one in 10 hospitals didn’t have a single bed free on at least one night the previous week; nearly 55,000 people were left waiting on trolleys in Accident and Emergency for more than four hours in November; and one in 12 ambulances were kept waiting outside AE for half an hour or more because there was no space inside for their patients. The above figures offer insight into the challenges the NHS is faced with: lack of funding, understaffing, closure of local services due to centralization drives, and an increase in reliance on privatized services.?What is the aim of the NHS and has it achieved its goals yet? What do you think contributes to its current success or failure? In your opinio
