Abstract Euphemism originates from the taboo of language. It is a common language and speech phenomenon in the process of language use. It exists and is active in different language communities and different social levels. As an important linguistic phenomenon, euphemism plays an important role in coordinating interpersonal relationships. Under the background of global economic integration, people all over the world are communicating more and more frequently. However, due to the influence of different social, historical, geographical, religious and other factors, people of different nationalities inevitably have obvious differences and differences in the use of euphemism. Without understanding these differences will inevitably lead to obstacles in communication. In order to use Euphemism in cross-cultural communication better and eliminate communication barriers, it is necessary to have a deep understanding of the similarities and differences between Chinese and English euphemisms and their cultural connotations. From the perspective of communicative function, this paper first introduces the definition, origin and classification of euphemisms, and then focuses on the similarities and differences between Chinese and English euphemisms. By the study this paper will explore the similarities and differences between Chinese and English euphemisms, so as to help learners better understand euphemisms and correctly use euphemisms in cross-cultural communication and meanwhile avoid cultural conflicts and communication barriers.
