Abstract
In order to investigate the physiological and molecular mechanisms of the combined effects of temperature increase during flowering and short-term soil waterlogging on cotton fiber development, we conducted a field experiment using typical cotton varieties in the agricultural region under different temperature and soil waterlogging treatments. We studied the physiological and fiber quality indicators of cotton, as well as the expression of related genes. The results showed that the coupling effect of temperature increase and soil waterlogging would significantly affect the physiological and biochemical indicators and fiber quality indicators of cotton. Temperature increase would cause a decrease in cotton fiber length, strength, and toughness. It would also significantly reduce the expression levels of some genes in cotton fibers, including DREB1, MYB, NAC, bZIP and other genes. Soil waterlogging would inhibit cotton growth and development, leading to a decrease in physiological indicators such as plant height, stem diameter, and leaf area. It would also significantly affect the fiber quality indicators, such as decreasing fiber strength and toughness, increasing short fiber rate, and significantly affecting the expression levels of cotton fiber-related genes, including FLA, CESA, GhRDL, and PaTPK. The coupling of temperature increase and soil waterlogging also affects the expression of cotton fiber cell wall synthesis and metabolic pathways, including cellulose synthesis pathway, lignin synthesis pathway, and
