Metformin has shown to be effective and safe with few side effects, making it one of the most prescribed medications for diabetes. Objective: The objective of this study is to synthesize metformin using a modified procedure and to evaluate its yield and purity. Additionally, the physical and chemical properties of the synthesized metformin will be analyzed and compared to commercially available metformin. Methodology: The synthesis of metformin will be carried out using a modified procedure of the previously established method. The starting materials, guanidine nitrate and methylamine, will be reacted under specific reaction conditions to obtain the final product, metformin. The product will then undergo purification using recrystallization and analyzed for yield and purity using various analytical techniques. The physical and chemical properties of the synthesized metformin will be analyzed and compared to commercially available metformin. Properties such as melting point, solubility, and spectral analysis will be evaluated. Expected outcomes: It is expected that the modified procedure to synthesize metformin will produce a high yield of the final product with a high level of purity. The synthesized metformin will also have similar physical and chemical properties to commercially available metformin.
