The size and business-critical nature of the GM network make a very serious implementation of Network Management a key issue. GM management recognizes this and has invested a full project toward a comprehensive Network Management solution. This project is in its earliest stages of identifying issues and potential products. This project, to define an infrastructure for Develop Product and primarily affecting several buildings on a single GM campus, was not the appropriate venue to define a Global Network Management Architecture. It was determined that the concept and processes involved in supporting the defined infrastructure developed in this project should be described to support the full Network Management effort. Concept Most people will say that the goal of Network Management is resolve problems quickly. This is not the case; the primary goal of Network Management is to eliminate problems before they become problems. What are normally called problems are really issues that have grown out of proportion. There are really four key factors in successful implementations of Network Management and three of them are manual. Only the tools utilized in Network Management are not manual. Trained and experienced staff is necessary to utilize the tools successfully and more importantly, solid management of the Operations Center is fundamentally required. Network Management often fails because, although tools and staff to utilize them are in place, management is not in place to effectively combine them.
