Introduction • Poor performance of MAs, and lack of suitable targets makes cooperative strategies as a viable alternative for firm growth • Strategic alliance is considered a primary type of co-operative strategy whereby firms combine resources and capabilities to create competitive advantage (collaborative or relational advantage) • For all cooperative strategies, success is dependent on active involvement of all participants, trust and consistency in pursuing common objectives. Types of Alliances • Alliances can be classified into three in terms of ownership arrangements: – Joint venture, equity alliance and nonequity alliance • Joint Venture: a strategic alliance where 2 or more firms create a legally t to share resources and capabilities in develo competitive advantage – Equal percentages are owned and contributions to operations should be on equal terms Types of Alliances Examples of Joint Venture: • Sony Ericcson Communications (formed 2001 but Sony acquired Ericcson’s share in Feb 2012), now Sony Communications . • Fujitsu Computers (formed 1999; Fujitsu bought out AG in April 2009), now Fujitsu Technology Solutions • MillerCoors (SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing – formed 2007) Types of Alliances Equity Strategic Alliance : Alliance of two or more firms owning different percentages of the formed by combining their resources and capabilities A lot of foreign direct investments are completed through equity strategic alliance Equity alliances could also be through: Partial acquisition (one firm buys minority interests in another) Cross-equity transaction (alliance partners e equity stakeholders in each other’s business)
