Chapter Overview
Chapter 11 provides an introduction to project risk management, one of the most
misunderstood knowledge areas of project management. Topics lude what risk is and why
risk management is important, project risk management processes, tools, and techniques, the
Top Ten Risk Item Tracking technique, sensitivity ysis, and simulation.

The Importance of Project Risk Management
Unlike crisis management, good project risk management often goes unnoticed. Define risk,
risk utility or risk tolerance, and the difference among people who are risk-averse, risk-
seeking, and risk-neutral. Emphasize that risk management should be done during the entire
project life cycle. It is especially important to consider risk when selecting projects to work
on, as is illustrated in the opening and closing cases.
