PAGE PAGE 15 Unit 9 Wisdom of Love Unit Overview As an old saying goes, “All shall be well, and Jack shall have Jill.” This is, of course, the best outcome for lovers. However, things may not always run smoothly. Therefore, it requires knowledge and efforts to love and be loved. Text A tells an enlightening story about a young man named Akira who plucks up all his courage to make a proposal to a girl called Naomi from a noble family. On a cold rain night Akira alone went to the Fuji family to make a proposal. Then the author gives a detailed account of the process of Akira’s proposal at the Fuji’s and the change of the mother Chie’s attitude towards Akira. Despite her mother’s disapproval, Naomi determines to marry Akira. Text B explores the art of loving by rebutting a “peculiar attitude” which is, surprisingly, held by the majority of people. The author first points that most people believe that love is something lucky and there is nothing that needs to be learned about love. Then he argues that there are three premises on which the majority of people hold this peculiar attitude toward love. Finally he gives his advice on how to overcome the failure of love. Both courage shown in Text A and art advocated in Text B are essential in love. This unit will help students understand and master the wisdom of love.
