My Journey to the Great Wall at Juyongguan Pass
By Connie Liao from Longmen, Huizhou
It was at the crack of dawn on the 4th day of my journey in Beijing that we got up and then we spent more than one hour travelling by bus to the Juyongguan Pass.
Actually, I have already appreciated its beauty on TV programs many times before, but I couldn’t wait to get off the bus and
hurried to have a look at it, as soon as the bus stopped.

showing us the way in the front of the tour group. After appointing a time to meet other companions, I rushed to climb it ahead of them. On the way to the top, I had a friendly talk with an American
boy who had come to China with his family. I told him that there is an old saying that he who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man. Maybe these words encouraged both of us, we got to the top without complaining being tired, hungry, thirsty and so on.
We passed several watchtowers along the Wall. My American friend asked me, “What were they used for?” “Sending a warning
message.” I replied.
After thinking for a while, I added, “Suppose you are here, in this
watchtower, and you want to let me know the enemy is coming. But I am in that one, then you can set a fire and I can see the light and smoke.”
Talking something about the Great Wall, we got to the top around thirty minutes later.
The higher you climb, the further you will see. It rang true to us especially when the mountains below completely emerged before our eyes. You couldn’t imagine how incredibly beautiful the scene was when you were standing on the top of the high and steep Juyongguan Pass.
Looking down, I
