英语专业新生的跨文化适应问题研究的中期报告 Introduction Cross-cultural adaptation is becoming increasingly important with the growing globalization and intercultural communication. English major freshmen, who are expected to study, communicate, and cooperate with people from different cultural backgrounds, need to be adept at cross-cultural adaptation. However, cross-cultural adaptation is a challenging process that English major freshmen face in their university life. This report aims to review the literature on cross-cultural adaptation, explore the challenges English major freshmen encounter, and offer some suggestions for their cross-cultural adaptation. Literature Review Cross-cultural adaptation refers to the process of adjusting to a new cultural environment by understanding and dealing with cultural differences (Ward Kennedy, 1994). Cross-cultural adaptation involves various aspects, including language, behavior, values, and beliefs (Kim, 2001). According to Bennetts (1993) Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, cross-cultural adaptation can be divided into six stages: denial, defense, minimization, acceptance, adaptation, and integration. English major freshmen face numerous challenges in cross-cultural adaptation. Firstly, language is a significant obstacle for English major freshmen in understanding and being understood by people from different cultural backgrounds. Secondly, cultural differences cause misunderstanding and miscommunication between people from different cultures, which is a challenging problem for English major freshmen (Kim, 2008). Finally, homesickness, loneliness, and the pressure of academic study, coupled with cultural differences, can cause English major freshmen to experience psychological stress and emotional strain (Ting-Toomey Chung, 2005).
