FalmontPrimarySchoolescapedanearthquakethathitthe
countyat2:27p.m.Only5studentssufferedslightinjuries,
despitethecurrentfiguresof7killedandover200injuredinthe
disasterareaatlarge.
AliceBrown,headteacheratFalmontPrimarySchool,was
teachingwhenthefloorbegantoshake.Herstudentsreaction
wasquickandcorrect—theymovedundertheirdesks,headfirst,
andheldontothelegsofthedesks.Atthesametime,Miss
Brownquicklyopenedtheclassroomdoor,incaseitbecame
damagedduringtheshakingandcouldnotopen.Therewere
loudcrashesofglassbreakingandthingsfallingtotheground,
butthestudentsremainedstillandwaitedcalmlyandquietly.
Themomenttheshakingstopped,MissBrownsenseditwas
thebesttimefortheclasstomaketheirescape.Shesignalledto
herstudentstoexittheclassroominanorderlylinecoveringtheir
headswiththeirhands.Withinoneminuteandtwentyseconds,
thewholeclasswentdownthestairsandrushedtothe
playground.Soonstudentsfromotherclassesarrivedtoo.After
arollcallconfirmedthatallweresafeandsound,theyrelaxed,
laughing,cryingandhuggingeachother.
“Wepractiseearthquakesafetyprocedurestwicea
year,”saidMissBrown,“sothekidswerecalmenoughto
protectthemselvesduringtheearthquake.”
