DengYaping(1973--）isaChinesetabletennisplayer,whowonsixworldchampionshipsandfourOlympicchampionshipsbetween1989and1997.Sheisregardedasoneofthegreatestplayersinthehistoryofthesport.

Dengbeganplayingtabletennisatagefive,andfouryearslatershewonherprovincialjuniorchampionship.Shewasage13whenshewonherfirstnationalchampionship.

Despitehersuccess,shewasinitiallydeniedaspotonthenationalteambecauseshewassoshort(shestoodonlymetres[4feet11inches]tall).Hertalent,however,couldnotbedenied,andshewasfinallyincludedonthenationalteamin1988.SheteamedwithQiaoHongtowinherfirstworldchampionshiptitleinthewomensdoublescompetitionin1989.Twoyearslaterin1991,Dengwonherfirstsinglesworldchampionship.

Atthe1992OlympicsinBarcelona,Spain,shewonagoldmedalinboththesinglesanddoublescompetitionsandrepeatedthefeatatthe1996OlympicsinAtlanta,

Whensheretiredattheageof24,shehadwonmoretitlesthananyotherplayerinthesport,includingfourOlympicgoldmedals,andhadbeenWorldChampion18times.From1990to1997,sheretainedthetitleofworldNo.1rankedfemaletabletennisplayerfor8years.ShewasvotedChinesefemaleathleteofthecentury,andjoinedtheInternationalTableTennisFederationHallofFamein2023.
