Graphcoloringisafundamentalconceptingraphtheory,whichreferstothetaskofassigningcolorstotheverticesoredgesofagraphsubjecttocertainrestrictions.Graphcoloringhasvariousapplicationsindifferentdomains,suchascomputerscience,socialnetworks,andbiology.Generally,therearetwotypesofgraphcoloring:vertexcoloringandedgecoloring.Vertexcoloringreferstotheassignmentofcolorstotheverticesofagraphsuchthatnotwoadjacentverticessharethesamecolor,whileedgecoloringinvolvesthecoloringofedgeswithdistinctcolorssothatnotwoadjacentedgessharethesamecolor.Inthisreport,wewilldiscussthedifferencebetweenvertexcoloringandedgecoloringandtheirapplications.

VertexColoring

Vertexcoloringisthemostcommonlyusedconceptingraphcoloring.Invertexcoloring,asetofcolorsisassignedtoeachvertexofthegraph,andnotwoadjacentverticescanbeassignedthesamecolor.Theminimumnumberofcolorsrequiredtocoloragraphiscalledthechromaticnumberofthegraph.ThevertexcoloringproblemisNP-hard,whichimpliesthatthereisnoknownefficientalgorithmtofindtheoptimalsolutionforeverygraph.

Oneofthemostpopularalgorithmsforvertexcoloringisbasedonthegreedyapproach.Thegreedyalgorithmassignsthecolortotheverticesonebyoneandchoosestheavailablecolorwhichhasbeenassignedtotheminimumnumberofneighboringvertices.Anotheralgorithmforvertexcoloringisthebacktrackingalgorithm,whichisarecursivealgorithmthatexhaustivelysearchesforallpossiblecolorarrangements.Inaddition,thereareseveralheuristicalgorithms,suchasWelshPowellalgorithm,DSATURalgorithmandothersthatcanbeusedtosolvevertexcoloringproblemeffectively.
