TheoriginalEdinburghInternationalFestivalstartedin1947,andoffersvisitorsarichprogrammeofclassicalmusic,theatre,operaanddance.Thesameyearthattheofficialfestivalbegan,ahandfuloftheatricalcompaniesgatecrashedthefestivalandorganisedtheirownevent,whichgrewintowhatisnowcalledtheFringeFestival.

Theterm‘fringe’meanssomethingontheoutsideofthemainevent,butovertheyears,theEdinburghFringeFestivalhasbecomethelargestofallthefestivals,andindeedthelargestartsfestivalintheworld!

TheFringefeaturesperformersandactswhicharelesstraditionalandmoreunconventionalthanthoseintheInternationalFestival,andincludesalotofstand-upcomedyshows,musicandchildren’sentertainment.TheEdinburghFringeisseenasanimportantplaceforupandcomingstand-upcomedianstoperformat.

AtthesametimeinEdinburghtherearevariousotherfestivals,suchastheJazzandBluesfestival,theBookFestival,theFilmFestival,andevenanInternetFestival!ThereisalsoamulticulturalfestivalcalledMela,whichcelebratesthediversityofpeoplelivinginEdinburgh,inparticularpeoplewithSouthAsianorigins.

EdinburghCastleisthesiteofoneofthemostspectacularevents–TheMilitaryTattoo.Amilitarytattoohasnothingtodowithatattooonyourskin!Itmeansaperformanceofmilitarymusic,forexample,bymarchingbands.InScotlandthemilitarytattootraditionallyincludesbagpipesanddrums.Thisyearthedisplaywillalsofeaturedancers,horsesandmotorbikes!
