Introduction

MonaBakerNarrativeTheoryisanessentialtheorywhenitcomestounderstandingthetranslationprocess.Thetheoryprovidesdifferenttypesofnarrativesandtheirsignificanceincreatingmeaningintranslation.Thetheoryemphasizesonhownarrativestrategies,plot,andnarrativeperspectiveimpactthereadersunderstandingofthetext.Thispaperpresentsamid-termreportofthereconstructiontranslationofYanFusTienYienLunusingMonaBakersNarrativetheory.

Background

ThereconstructionofYanFusTienYienLunaimstoimprovetheoriginaltranslatedtexttomeetthecurrentlinguisticstandards.YanFustranslation,whichwasdonein1895,wasthefirstattempttotranslateDarwinsOriginofSpeciesintoChinese.ThoughYanFustranslationwassignificantandessential,ithadsomedeficiencies,suchasinadequatelinguisticexpressions,oversimplifications,anddistortionsofthescientificterms.Therefore,thisreconstructionaimstorefineandimprovetheinadequatelinguisticexpressionsandscientificterms.

Methodology

ThereconstructionfollowedtheTranslationAnalysisandRe-creationProcess(TARP)proposedbyKuo(2017).TheTARPmodelinvolvesthefollowingsteps:analysisofthesourcetext(ST)andtargettext(TT),translationandre-creationoftheTT,andevaluationofthere-createdTT.Inthisstudy,theTARPmodelwasadaptedtofitMonaBakerNarrativeTheoryapproach.

MonaBakerNarrativeTheoryarguesthatnarrativescreatemeaningintranslations.Theapproachcategorizesnarrativesintofourbroadstrategies:labelling,focalization,symbolism,andnarrativeframes.Thesestrategieshelpthereaderunderstandthetextandconveythemeaningappropriately.
