    AsaresultofLeVau’senveloppeofLouisXIII’schateau,thekingandthequeenhadnewapartmentsinthenewaddition,knownatthetimeasthechateauneuf.Thegrandsappartements,whichareknownrespectivelyasthegrandappartementduroiandthegrandappartementdelareine,occupiedthemainorprincipalfloorofthechateauneuf.LeVau’sdesignforthestateapartmentscloselyfollowedItalianmodelsoftheday,asevidencedbytheplacementoftheapartmentsonthenextfloorupfromthegroundlevel—thepianonobile—aconventionthearchitectborrowedfrom16thand17thcenturyItalianpalacedesign(Berger,1986;Verlet,1985).

    LeVau’splancalledforanenfiladeofsevenrooms,eachdedicatedtooneofthethenknownplanetsandtheirassociatedtitularRomandeity.LeVau’splanwasboldashedesignedaheliocentricsystemthatcenteredontheSalonofApollo.Thesalond’Apollonoriginallywasdesignedastheking’sbedchamber,butservedasathroneroom.DuringthereignofLouisXIV(until1689),asolidsilverthronestoodonaPersiancarpetcovereddaisonthesouthwallofthisroom(Berger,1986;Dangeau,1854-1860;Josephson,1926;1930;Verlet,1985).
