Pavementsaredesignedandconstructedtoprovidedurableall-weathertravelingsurfacesforsafeandspeedymovementofpeopleandgoodswithanacceptablelevelofcomforttousers.Thesefunctionalrequirementsofpavementsareachievedthroughcarefulconsiderationsinthefollowingaspectsduringthedesignandconstructionphases:(a)selectionofpavementtype,(b)selectionofmaterialstobeusedforvariouspavementlayersandtreatmentofsubgradesoils,(c)structuralthicknessdesignforpavementlayers,(d)subsurfacedrainagedesignforthepavementsystem,

(e)surfacedrainageandgeometricdesign,and(f)ridabilityofpavementsurface.

Thetwomajorconsiderationsinthestructuraldesignofhighwayandairportpavementsarematerialdesignandthicknessdesign.Materialdesigndealswiththeselection of suitable materials for various pavement layers and mix design ofbituminousmaterials(forflexiblepavement)orportlandcementconcrete(forrigidandinterlockingblockpavements).Thesetopicsarediscussedinotherchaptersofthishandbook.Thischapterpresentstheconceptsandmethodsofpavementthicknessdesign.Asthenameimplies,thicknessdesign referstotheprocedureofdeterminingthe required thickness for each pavement layer to provide a structurally soundpavementstructurewithsatisfactoryperformanceforthedesigntrafficovertheselecteddesignlife.Drainagedesignexaminestheentirepavementstructurewithrespect to its drainage requirements and incorporates facilities to satisfythoserequirements.
