Introduction

IdiomsplayavitalroleintheEnglishlanguage,whicharewidelyusedindailycommunication.However,withthedevelopmentofsocietyandthediversificationofculture,idiomshaveundergonevariouschangesandvariations.Fromtheperspectiveofcognitivesemantics,thispaperattemptstoexplorethephenomenonofidiomaticvariationanditsrulesofvariation.

1.Thedefinitionofidiomsandtheirvariants

Idiomsarefixedexpressionswithanon-literalmeaningthatcannotbeunderstoodfromitsindividualcomponents.Variantsofidiomsrefertothechangesofidiomsinform,structure,meaning,orusage.Cognitivesemanticsisanimportantdirectioninidiomaticresearch,whichnotonlyhelpsunderstandthecognitivemechanismsofidiomcomprehensionbutalsoprovidesinsightsintothereasonsandrulesofidiomvariation.

2.Theclassificationsystemofidiomaticvariants

Basedondifferentcriterion,idiomaticvariantscanbeclassifiedintofivecategories:deformation,replacement,extension,simplification,andmerging.Deformationreferstothechangesinthegrammaticalstructureorsoundpatternofidioms,whilereplacementmeanssubstitutingoneelementforanotherinidiomconstruction.Extensionrequiresaddingnewelementstotheoriginalidiom,andconversely,simplificationinvolvesremovingsomeelementsfromtheoriginalidiom.Mergingmeanscombiningtwoormoreidiomsintoanewone.
